1.How many hours of lessons do I need to pass the Class 5 Road test?

According to Alberta Transportation’s Driver Training Program, students with no prior driving experience are recommended to complete at least 20 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction before attempting the Class 5 road test.

For internationally licensed drivers requiring a road test, a refresher course is not mandatory but highly recommended to familiarize yourself with Alberta traffic rules and regulations.

Stage 1: Learner (Class 7)

1. Age requirement: 14 years and above
2. Parental/guardian consent: Required for applicants under 18 years old
3. Knowledge test: Pass a multiple-choice test covering Alberta’s traffic laws and road signs
4. Vision test: Pass a standard vision test to ensure adequate visual acuity
5. Study materials: Review the Alberta Driver’s Handbook and other resources

Stage 2: Probationary (Class 5-GDL)

1. Age requirement: 16 years and above
2. Parental/guardian consent: Required for applicants under 18 years old
3. Class 7 holding period: Hold a Class 7 learner’s license for at least 12 months
4. Road test: Pass a driving skills test, covering urban and rural driving scenarios

Stage 3: Full (Class 5)

1. Age requirement: 18 years and above
2. Probationary period: Complete a 24-month probationary period.
3. Suspension and demerit-free period:Maintain a suspension-free and demerit-free driving record for at least 12 months
4. Driver training program: Complete an approved driver training program to reduce the probationary period

Note: Drivers may be entitled to reduce their probationary period by 6 months by completing an approved class 5 training program.
